Potassium Hydroxide

Potassium Hydroxide

Potassium hydroxide pellets are a highly caustic, strongly alkaline solid used in detergents, agrochemicals, electroplating, and chemical synthesis. They dissolve rapidly in water with intense heat release to form clear, conductive KOH solutions suitable for pH control and electrolysis.

Pellet form minimizes dust and aids precise, safe charging of reactors and tanks. Their high alkalinity and strong saponifying power make them ideal for liquid soaps, degreasers, and specialty cleaners where sodium-free alkali is preferred.

Sr. No. Description Specification
1 Purity Typically 85–90%
2 Chemical Formula KOH
3 Form White to slightly yellow hygroscopic pellets
4 Country of origin India
5 Quantities 25 kg bags, 50 kg carboys, and bulk kg lots for large users
  • White, hygroscopic pellets; deliquescent, absorbing moisture and CO₂ from air.
  • Strong base; highly soluble in water and lower alcohols, forming strongly alkaline solutions (pH >13).
  • Generates significant heat on dissolution; an exothermic reaction can cause boiling and splattering if not controlled.
  • Non-combustible but reacts vigorously with acids and many organic materials.
  • Manufacture of liquid soaps, detergents, degreasers, and cleaners that require potassium salts.

  • pH control and neutralization in chemical processing, agrochemicals, and petroleum refining.

  • Electrolytes in alkaline batteries and electroplating/electrolysis processes.

  • Intermediate in the production of potassium salts, dyes, pharmaceuticals, and specialty chemicals.

  • Classified as corrosive: causes severe skin burns and eye damage; harmful if swallowed.

  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves, goggles or face shield, and protective clothing; ensure eyewash and safety shower availability.

  • Add pellets slowly to water with stirring, never the reverse, to control heat and splashing.

  • Store in airtight, corrosion-resistant containers in cool, dry areas away from acids, metals like aluminum/zinc, and ammonium salts.
